On March 18, 2017, UNICEF collaborated with the United Nations, the United Nations Foundation, and voice actors from the film Smurfs: The Lost Village to celebrate International Day of Happiness and promote the Small Smurfs Big Goals campaign. Through this campaign, the organizations sought to engage youth around the world to learn about the 17 Sustainable Development Goals approved by global leaders in 2015. The Sustainable Development Goals reflect the International Day of Happiness’ emphasis on personal happiness and well-being by promoting access to decent work and access to nutritious food and health care for all.
The event also recognized the efforts of three young adults, Sarina Divan (17), Karan Jerath (20), and Noor Samee (17), who have made significant contributions toward promoting the Sustainable Development Goals. To recognize their efforts, stars from the new Smurfs film presented the three with a key to Smurfs Village. In addition to recognizing these young adults for their work, the actors spoke to approximately 1,500 youth at the General Assembly Hall of the United Nations, encouraging them to join “Team Smurfs” and do their part to help the world achieve the Sustainable Development Goals.
